ESG coverage introduction – Environmental, social and governance

Generally speaking, ESG is about Environmental, Social, and Governance. It is a holistic framework that measures the sustainable and ethical behaviour of a business. The term ESG first came about in a report from 2004 titled “Who Cares Wins”, which was a joint initiative of financial institutions at the invitation of the United Nations.

Let’s zoom in to Air Traffic Management (ATM). The industry is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of thousands of flights every day and employs several hundreds of people. The importance of caring about people, workplaces and the environment should not be forgotten.

Firstly, ATM deals with the challenging task of reducing environmental impact while maintaining excellent operations. This involves implementing technologies to minimise fuel consumption, optimise flight paths, and reduce emissions. It is not just about meeting carbon reduction targets, but doing so in a way that enhances collaboration across borders, as the international dimension is the key characteristic of ATM.

Secondly, the well-being of air traffic controllers and other professionals is crucial in this safety-critical industry. These roles often come with high stress, long and challenging training processes and significant responsibilities, making mental health, work-life balance and professional development vital for sustaining a resilient workforce.

One of the main themes the ESG coverage will address, is the burning topic of attracting and retaining new aviation professionals to the ATM industry. The main issues to dive into will be the commonly known challenge of the shortage of skilled staff in the industry, and also creating workspaces for future aviation professionals, building up diverse teams, developing leadership skills and the importance of role models.

Our editorial team will talk to industry experts, people from the academic world, managers of all levels and other professionals and present their views and opinions. Our Team will also  research papers, studies and articles on the topic and post content in this space.
