Beyond demonstrations: Making BVLOS a daily reality

For years, achieving beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations has been one of the industry’s most significant ambitions. Demonstration flights, pilot programmes and regulatory trials have repeatedly demonstrated that drones can operate safely beyond the pilot’s direct line of sight, opening the door to applications ranging from infrastructure inspections and emergency response to environmental monitoring and logistics. 

Today, however, the conversation is beginning to shift. The question is no longer whether BVLOS operations are technically possible, but how they can become routine. As uncrewed aviation moves beyond isolated demonstrations, the industry’s focus is increasingly turning towards the infrastructure, collaboration and regulatory frameworks needed to support everyday operations at scale.

Evidence of this shift is already emerging across the wider aviation ecosystem. Regulators continue to refine the frameworks needed to support more complex operations, while airspace modernisation programmes are advancing the digital services required for drones to operate safely alongside conventional aircraft. At the same time, operators are beginning to integrate BVLOS into routine commercial and public sector activities, signalling a broader transition from demonstration to deployment.

Technology is no longer the biggest barrier 

The technological capabilities required for BVLOS operations have advanced considerably over recent years. Detect-and-avoid systems continue to improve, communications are becoming more resilient, and advances in artificial intelligence are enabling higher levels of autonomy and more sophisticated flight management. Simultaneously, advances in navigation, sensing technologies and onboard computing are expanding the range of environments in which drones can operate safely. 

Together, these developments demonstrate that many of the technical challenges surrounding BVLOS operations can be addressed. Across sectors such as energy, public safety, agriculture and infrastructure management, organisations are increasingly using drones to collect data more efficiently, improve safety and reduce operational costs. Whether inspecting power lines, monitoring railway corridors, surveying offshore wind farms or supporting emergency response, many of these use cases only reach their full potential when they can be conducted routinely beyond the pilot’s visual line of sight.

As these technologies continue to mature, attention is gradually shifting away from individual platform capabilities and towards the wider operational ecosystem needed to make routine BVLOS a reality.

Building an operational ecosystem

Routine operations depend on far more than the aircraft itself. They require an ecosystem capable of supporting safe, predictable and scalable operations within increasingly complex airspace. 

U-space services, digital airspace management, reliable communications infrastructure and interoperable traffic management systems are all essential to enabling scalable BVLOS operations. 

Across Europe, the continued rollout of U-space services illustrates how the focus is moving beyond individual aircraft towards the wider digital infrastructure needed to support routine operations in shared airspace. The common information, strategic deconfliction and traffic management capabilities provided by these services will become increasingly important as the number of simultaneous drone operations grows. 

Future flight extends beyond aviation 

Routine BVLOS operations depend on collaboration well beyond the aviation sector. Energy companies, transport authorities, emergency services, telecommunications providers and infrastructure operators all have an important role to play in shaping how drones are integrated into everyday operations. 

Collaboration between these stakeholders will also be crucial. Operational experience gained in one sector can inform best practices in another, while shared approaches to safety, cybersecurity and data management can help accelerate adoption across multiple industries.

This growing level of cooperation reflects a broader shift within aviation, where future flight depends not only on innovation but also on the ability of organisations to work across traditional sector boundaries.

From demonstrations to everyday operations

The success of BVLOS will ultimately be measured by how seamlessly drones become integrated into routine operations. Achieving this will require continued investment in technology, regulatory evolution and, above all, sustained collaboration between industry, governments, air navigation service providers and other stakeholders across the aviation ecosystem.

As digital airspace services mature, regulatory frameworks continue to evolve and operational experience grows, the industry is laying the foundations for BVLOS to become an everyday capability rather than an exceptional one. Future flight will depend on the steady integration of safe, repeatable and scalable BVLOS operations into everyday aviation.
