Airspace Management Technology Weekly Highlights: 21 February 2025

We’re trying something new called AI Friday. The idea is to ask AI to summarise the top five stories from the prior week in a concise overview to help you determine where you want to dig deeper.

I’m not advocating to let AI write for you, but I am experimenting where it can help to analyse and summarise across multiple themes. Check it out and let us know what you think!

The aviation sector is witnessing significant technological convergence across multiple domains, with several breakthrough announcements shaping the future of airspace management and urban air mobility.

SESAR Joint Undertaking’s annual conference in Brussels highlighted the accelerating pace of ATM modernisation in Europe, announcing €254 million in new research funding. The initiative promises substantial returns, with projections indicating that every euro invested could generate €53 in socioeconomic benefits by 2050. Notably, the modernisation effort aims to reduce aviation emissions by 400 million tonnes of CO2 by 2050, equivalent to three years of Europe’s total aviation emissions. Full story

In the Asia-Pacific region, a landmark ATM technology planning retreat in Hong Kong brought together regional ANSPs with industry leaders including Thales, Aireon, and AIR Lab. The focus centered on digital transformation, with particular emphasis on SWIM implementation and FF-ICE protocols. AIR Lab’s introduction of a free-to-use virtual collaboration platform marks a significant shift toward regional information exchange standardisation. Full story

The Dutch ANSP LVNL is making substantial progress in its digital transformation, with General Manager Ronald Dubbeldam revealing the successful implementation of agile methodologies across 43 scrum teams. The organisation’s new Polaris control room underwent its first live traffic handling tests in late 2024, paving the way for full implementation in 2026-2028. LVNL’s transition from its proprietary AAA system to the iTEC Alliance platform signals a broader industry shift toward collaborative ATM solutions. Full story

In urban air mobility developments, Volocopter partnered with Jet Systems Hélicoptères Services to launch eVTOL operations in France, initially focusing on Paris before expanding to established helicopter routes in the southwest and southeast regions. The collaboration aims to serve up to 15,000 passengers annually, building on existing infrastructure partnerships with Groupe ADP. Full story

The telecommunications sector is increasingly intersecting with aviation safety systems, as evidenced by Dimetor’s launch of NavSentry, an automated GNSS spoofing/jamming detection solution. This development showcases the growing role of telecom networks in providing redundant positioning data for both traditional aviation and unmanned systems. Major telecom providers including Swisscom and KDDI are establishing drone-as-a-service platforms, with Swisscom developing a network of 300 automated drone-in-a-box units and KDDI planning a 1,000-drone disaster response network in Japan. These developments collectively indicate a rapid convergence of traditional ATM systems with emerging technologies, emphasising the industry’s focus on digital transformation, safety enhancement, and environmental sustainability. The integration of telecommunications infrastructure with aviation systems appears to be a key trend shaping the future of airspace management.
