Show Notes

Sebastian Schier-Morgenthal, Head of the Air Traffic Controller Assistance Department at the DLR Institute of Flight Guidance, part of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), joins Vincent Lambercy to discuss how artificial intelligence could support the future of air traffic control through Project LOKI.

Project LOKI explores how AI can work alongside human controllers by introducing the Digital Interactive Reliable Controller (DIRC), designed to act as a trusted digital teammate rather than replace the human controller. The discussion covers:

  • How Project LOKI is redefining the relationship between human controllers and AI through collaborative task distribution
  • The opportunities and limitations of AI in air traffic control, from routine operations to complex decision-making
  • The path from research to real-world implementation, including certification, industry collaboration and the future of digital controller technology
