PANSA has put a new air traffic surveillance radar into operation in Polish airspace. It will ensure higher quality and stability of radar data.
The new device is the PSR/MSSR Mode S Gdańsk co-located radar, located at a new facility in Leźno near Gdańsk (Żukowo municipality). It is a system consisting of a primary radar and a secondary Mode S radar. The device serves as an independent radar data source for the Gdańsk TMA, situated in the surroundings of Lech Wałęsa Airport, and will ultimately replace the Raytheon/Indra PSR/MSSR system currently operating in this area – a system that has been in service since 2006 and lacks Mode S functionality.
The device is designed to ensure the continuity of airspace surveillance. The radar has passed technical and stability tests, flight tests, and radar data quality analyses. It has been entered into the Register of Aviation Ground Equipment. The Polish Civil Aviation Authority has issued a decision authorizing its operational launch.
The operational deployment of the radar ensures higher quality and stability of radar data, increased Mode S coverage in areas with the highest air traffic density, and an enhanced level of operational safety.
The commissioning of the new system marks another significant step in the modernization of the air traffic control infrastructure being carried out by the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency. In line with its 2024 announcements, the Agency is consistently implementing CNS investments aimed at maintaining the highest possible operational efficiency of Polish airspace.
