The new ‘KRW’ ILS/DME system at Kraków Airport has become operational

The Polish Air Navigation Services Agency launched the new ‘KRW’ ILS/DME precision approach system.

The system’s readiness for operational use was confirmed by FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) and SAT (Site Acceptance Test) procedures, as well as aerial test flights, which demonstrated that the system’s parameters were fully compliant with the requirements and recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The positive outcome of the implementation inspection carried out by the Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that the safety requirements specified for this project had been met.

From 28 July 2026, the device operated in ‘TST’ test mode, and from 1 October it began transmitting the identification code ‘KRW’, which signifies its operational suitability for use under CAT I conditions and the availability of precision approach and landing procedures based on this system. Details of the equipment have been published in the AIP Poland aeronautical information publication.

New system meets the technical requirements for Category II, as confirmed during the implementation flight. Kraków Airport has also completed work to adapt the airport infrastructure to Category II requirements. Once all formal and operational requirements have been met and the system has successfully undergone the certification process, its implementation for Category II operations is planned for the first quarter of 2027.
