Precise digital images from cameras placed at a height of 40 meters, providing advanced observation of the situation at the airport and its vicinity, will enable air traffic controllers to make optimal operational decisions. This will be possible thanks to the construction of a remote air traffic control tower (rTWR) at Warsaw-Modlin Airport, the first investment of its kind in Poland.
The greatest advantage of a remote air traffic control tower is the ability to maximize the use of technologies that aid controllers in their daily work. The highest possible level of operational safety will be guaranteed, among other things, by integrating images from multiple cameras, zooming in, optimal observation in low-visibility conditions, and automatic object tracking. Thanks to the use of infrared technology, effective observation of the airport’s maneuvering area will be possible even at night.
Images from the airport cameras will be transmitted in real time to the operations center at the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency headquarters in Warsaw, where air traffic controllers will work, currently performing their duties from a stationary tower at Modlin Airport.
The Modlin rTWR was designed with the future in mind. Its scalability allows for expansion and adaptation to Modlin’s growing operational needs. By installing cameras at a height of approximately 40 meters in the central part of the airport, further development of the airport infrastructure will be possible without affecting the visibility of the maneuvering area.
Remote control systems are more economical to implement than traditional ones, also due to lower infrastructure costs, i.e. the abandonment of the construction of a traditional air traffic control tower, and in the later stages of operation, the absence of building maintenance and renovation costs.
The investment at Modlin Airport is not only a significant technological leap forward, but also a real change in the way we think about air traffic control. Thanks to this innovation, PANSA controllers will have tools that allow them to operate faster and more precisely – regardless of conditions. The operational launch of the remote tower system at Modlin Airport is scheduled for mid-2028.
The following persons took part in a press conference on this matter at Modlin Airport today:
Adam Struzik, Marshal of the Masovian Voivodeship,Magdalena Jaworska-Maćkowiak, President of the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency,
Jacek Kowalski, President of the Management Board of Warsaw-Modlin Airport,
Niclas Gustavsson, Head of Saab ATM Sales, Saab ATM, the company responsible for the technological implementation of the system.
