More air traffic controllers for the skies over Germany: DFS increases the number of training places

DFS, the German air navigation service provider, is planning to recruit 144 new student air traffic controllers in the coming year. DFS is preparing for the increasing number of flight movements by expanding the numbers undergoing training to become air traffic controllers. In addition, DFS is also offering 50 places for students in so-called dual courses of studies (degree programmes in such areas as air traffic management, engineering and IT) as well as apprenticeships under training programmes offered by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK).

Around 200 new recruits in 2025
This year, DFS will welcome 136 trainees into its air traffic controller training programme. Together with career starters on dual courses of studies and in IHK training programmes, around 200 talented individuals will be embarking on their careers in the air navigation services.

Training opportunities 2026
DFS plans to increase the number of trainees for the coming year. The training portfolio includes the following job profiles: air traffic controller training; dual course of studies in such areas as air traffic management, air navigation services engineer or computer science as well as IHK commercial and technical apprenticeships.

The application deadline for the dual courses of study in IT, engineering and management as well as for the IHK apprenticeships is 31 October 2025. Applications for air traffic controller training and the dual course of studies in Air Traffic Management can be handed in all year round.

In addition to career entry in classical apprenticeships or dual study degree programmes, DFS is also planning to recruit other operational specialists, such as AIS officers.

Career opportunities for experienced professionals in engineering and IT
As part of its ATS system strategy, DFS is fundamentally modernising its technical infrastructure for air traffic control. It is looking for experienced specialists and graduates in the fields of product management, requirements management, site reliability engineering and software development who would like to play an active role in shaping this change.
DFS is looking for individuals with technical expertise, a strategic view and enthusiasm for complex systems in a safety-critical environment.

Over 500 recruits to air traffic controller training since 2022
Commenting on the move, Andrea Wächter, Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) on the DFS Executive Board, said: “Traffic volumes are rising. Since 2022, we have already recruited over 500 people into our training programme for air traffic controllers. We are continuing along this path. With the decision to invest more in our training, we are securing the future viability of our company.”

Most training places for the coming year are still vacant. Applications are possible as of now. On the DFS careers website, you will find all the information you need about DFS as employer, the air traffic controller training programme and the other dual course of studies as well as those certified by the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK).
