Austro Control GmbH – New airspace structure for en-route Traffic

Safety and efficiency in Austrian airspace further enhanced.

Air traffic in Austrian airspace continues to grow – and with it the demands for safe, efficient and future-oriented air traffic management. With a new airspace structure that has been in force since 19 February, the Austrian air navigation service provider Austro Control has laid the foundation for continuing to handle the growing volume of air traffic safely, efficiently and punctually in the coming years.

The new airspace structure makes it possible to distribute traffic flows more effectively, reduce complexity in individual sectors and thus provide sustainable support for the daily work of air traffic controllers. In addition to efficiency and punctuality, particular attention was paid to direct routing with to making the flow of air traffic as environmentally friendly as possible. Overall, this enables an improvement in throughput through Austrian airspace with the same level of resources. The new airspace structure thus allows available capacities to be tailored even more specifically to the respective traffic requirements.

During the night of 18 to 19 February, all relevant data was updated simultaneously – at air traffic control, airlines, flight plan service providers and Eurocontrol. At Austro Control, this particularly affects our TopSky air traffic control system, which is supplied with the new airspace data, such as updated radar maps showing the new sector boundaries.

In numerous simulation units and live trials, more than 150 air traffic controllers contributed their experience and expertise to the development of the new airspace structure. This made it possible to implement a project within just over two years which is an outstanding achievement.
