Airwayz Submits Comments on SAFER SKIES Act Counter-UAS Rule

Airwayz recently submitted formal comments on the DOJ/DHS interim final rule implementing the SAFER SKIES Act, the framework governing counter-UAS operations by State, local, Tribal, and territorial law enforcement.

Our comments support the rule and focus on one implementation question: how the framework treats the coordination layer — the software that fuses detection sensors into a common operating picture, supports the certified officer’s decision, and carries the rule’s notification, reporting, and data-protection requirements. The current rule addresses detection and mitigation equipment in detail, but does not yet state how this layer fits within the technology authorization framework, which leaves agencies without a clear basis for procurement and compliance decisions.

We proposed draft regulatory text for a voluntary, open-standards evaluation pathway open to any qualifying manufacturer, so that agencies can verify what they deploy rather than rely on vendor representations — ours included.
